It revisits some of the themes of his earlier book on climate change, Hell and High Water , almost ten years later and in quite a different tone. McIntosh recognised the need for New Zealand to face up to the implications of Britain’s default in the Pacific in 1941–42, and to maintain close relations with the region’s dominant power, the United States; this stance was not always easy to sustain with a still British-oriented government and public in the 1950s.
